Independent, yet never alone.

Two neurodivergent founders built Indie so that belonging would never be conditional.

A letter from us

Many families come to us after hearing no somewhere along the way. We know that feeling. We spent years in systems that offered belonging only on conditions.

Indie is our answer. It began with one belief: when education adapts to the child, every child can learn and thrive as themselves.

Every family we meet teaches us something. We carry it into every studio we build and every place we open.

How we got here

  1. 2020

As schools and services shut down, we began making adapted books and learning materials so families could keep learning at home. They reached families in 40 states.

  2. 2022

Indie became an independent learning company.

  3. 2024

We opened our first schoolhouse in Phoenix.

  4. 2025

Indie Innovation opened in downtown Phoenix.

  5. 2027

Indie Palm Laine opens, carrying the name of Laine, the grandmother our company is named for.

Meet the founders

Indie is founder-led. We are in our places every week, and we know our families by name.

Bri Hicks

Co-founder and COO

In 2020, as schools and services shut down, I began making handmade adapted books, visuals and learning materials so families could keep learning at home. Within a year, they had reached hundreds of families. That work grew into Indie.

Today I lead how Indie operates and grows, from our spaces and systems to how our team learns to do this work well. I’m neurodivergent, and that perspective shapes every part of how we build.

Jessica Costa

Co-founder and CEO

I began my career as an early childhood educator and helped found an inclusive preschool in Hartford, Connecticut. I loved child-led teaching, and I saw that even inclusive programs didn’t always give neurodivergent and disabled children an equitable experience.

As a first-generation American who learned English in public school, and as a neurodivergent adult, I know what it feels like when a system isn’t built for you. I lead Indie’s vision and direction, and every decision comes back to the child.

Why an elephant

The more a learner belongs, the more freely they become themselves.

Indie means independent. An elephant calf is never left to figure out the world alone. It learns inside the herd, and when it’s ready, it walks on carrying everything the herd taught it.

Elephants also plant palms. Herds carry seeds for miles and leave them in new ground, and whole groves grow where a herd once passed. Every new Indie place is a grove.

Leading the work with us

They hold the standard for learning and therapy at every Indie place.
